Upon a Sunset

Fast-falling dusk
sweeps across the beach
as the sun dips down the horizon,
its last flare spilling over
gold-tinged waters.

Waves crash
against jagged edges of cliffs.
Conches strewn by the coast
froth tight-lipped with secrets.

A lone seagull
hangs low in the sky,
remnants of its soliloquy
echoing through the salty air.

Indenting the sand are
tires washed ashore,
grooves faded
from trying to stay afloat
for far too long.

The beach is emptying
but let’s linger awhile,
raise our faces to the sky,
feel tendrils of hair waltz in the wind,
catch the last rays of light
quivering through trees.
Let’s stay awhile,
laugh and skip on driftwood.

May moments like these
occur more often than not,
when amidst heaviness
we remember to take off our shoes
and dance.
