I passed the rose to her, the gentle red in the petals matching the bloom of her cheeks. The crinkle of a frown, which I always found so adorable, made a heart of her forehead with her arched brows.

My heart capered with joy as I saw my Valentine in front of me, with my gift, all mine. Her eyes began to fill with tears and my heart cried with her; a chorus of joy and relief swelled inside me.

She looked at me and, with a voice that was scarcely a whisper, said, “But I have never, ever seen you before…”
