Birmingham — On Saturday July 18, Sloss Furnaces hosted the first ever Sloss Music and Arts Festival, an event that attracted live-music lovers and festival junkies from across the state and nation.

The first day of the festival boasted musical acts from Lord Huron, Young the Giant, Cage the Elephant and the finale of day one: Modest Mouse.

Kscope met up with a group of UAB students and their friends for the first day of the festival, letting them guide us through the steamy, heat-wave induced music bonanza as we covered the event via Twitter and Snapchat.

Savanna Ciaccio, a UAB Health Care Management student, let Kscope follow her around as she and her friends experienced day one of Sloss Fest.

The first show they attended? L.A. based indie act, Lord Huron, a new favorite amongst Ciaccio’s friends. Before the folk-inspired artist performed, fans became concerned when the skies darkened and thunder crackled in the distance.

However, Sloss Fest reassured everyone via Twitter that they were in constant contact with the weather service and that the festival would continue as planned.

When Lord Huron took the stage he addressed the traditional southern afternoon thunderstorm:

After Lord Huron and Swedish duo First Aid Kit, the UAB crew returned to the aptly named for the weather “Steam Stage” to see Irvine, California’s Young the Giant.

As Young the Giant finished their set, evening settled in on the festival grounds. The group took a break from shows to get a bite to eat at the festival’s many vendors, and then proceeded to trek across the grounds to find a spot for alt-rock group, Cage the Elephant.

The group of UAB Blazers left the Cage the Elephant during the “Cigarette Daydream” when they got word that the ground’s near the Blast Stage were already filling up for day one finale group, Modest Mouse.

Rushing over, they found spots on the foot-trampled grass to sit among other Mouse devotees in the smoky, humidity-saturated air.

As midnight approached, Modest Mouse continued to transform tired, sweaty festival attendees into a community of dancing free-spirits.

With image quality deteriorating in the early-morning hours, Ciaccio and her UAB Blazer friends ended there night waiting on the grounds to be picked up by a friend before starting the process over again on Sunday, day two of Sloss Fest.

Kscope will continue its coverage of Sloss Fest today through social media, and will be posting high quality photos of selected bands and festival fashion as part of its coverage.
