‘Attraction’, the Russians do it again!

Sci-Fi, Russian style, commendable and at such a low budget

Recall the movie “District 9" from South Africa in 2009? The world realized then that fantastic Sci-Fi movies could be made outside of Hollywood too. “Disctrict 9 went on to get nominated for 4 Oscars in 2010 including nominations for Best Picture, Best Visual Effects and Best Editing.

Released in January, 2017 almost 10 months before “Salyut 7”, “Attraction” is one Sci-Fi film to be watched from the Russians particularly for its special effects. After all that overdose of Hollywood and movies from the UK you’ll be surprised at the special effects from this film which takes the Russians a fraction of the costs of the production in Hollywood and the studios in the UK. It is unbelievable that this movie was made for just 6 million USD.

While it still does contain a lot of the Hollywood melodrama the special effects are the ones that’ll take you by surprise. In the most spectacular scene of the movie where an alien spacecraft is crashing onto a suburb in Moscow there are some very fine details that caught my eye. While it is crashing and coming to a halt notice the cars on the freeway zooming away to get away from the disaster, a very fine detail captured beautifully. The alien spaceship itself a wonderful creation. The alien’s suit was the other brilliant creation.

The movie has a sequel too, released in January, this year, titled “Invasion”. While the sequel isn’t what I would recommend, the first installment “Attraction” is the one you need to check out. On YouTube there is a VFX breakdown video of most of the special effects of this film. This video has already gathered over three million views. I would recommend watching it after watching the film and you will not believe all the scenes that were made with Visual Effects.
