Garudan — Mallus Deliver yet again!
A template for creating hits in other languages.
A simple recipe for delivering a hit movie in another language, watch Malayalam films or better still read this publication and remake the film in the language of choice. Anil Kapoor, the Bollywood actor became a star making remakes of Thamizh movies early in his career. Popular Malayalam film “Drishyam” remade in several Indian languages was also remade in Sinhalese, Chinese and the post on Wikipedia mentions that it is cuurently being remade in Korean.
Not now but for several decades now Malayalam cinema has delivered entertaining and fascinating stories that fit the success recipe mentioned earlier. This offering, “Garudan”, is no different and it is amazing how Malayalam films are able to pull off hit after hit without the exorbitant budgets of the regular “Mass” movies. “Garudan” costs less than half the cost of the Hyena scenes in the recent Tamil film “Leo” and it is such a gripping film without the unreality (things that defy logic and science) and unnecessary gore and violence and cruelty that is being fed via the “Mass’ movies.
“Garudan” with its lovely twists is a winner. A fantastic film for fast-ageing star Suresh Gopi and the not so fast-ageing Biju Menon. My only gripe was with the English being spoken at the beginning of the film almost making it an English film. The overdose could have been avoided. There are even English songs but one Malayalam song was good.
The twists are so beautiful that you are left wondering what’s coming next. The acting is also natural and not overdone. Supporting cast also do their job very well. Kudos to the director Anil Varma and to Jinesh M for the engaging story.
