Maharaja — Vijay Sethupathi makes a memorable 50
This isn’t another slasher film!
I recall with disgust the poster where someone (didn’t recognize it was Vijay Sehtupathi) seated in a chair with a machete like knife, probably resting, after a merciless killing rampage but the movie surprisingly turned out to be different and not some over the top macabre killing spree as it has been the norm in recent “mass” thriller films from India. The screenplay and the clever twists in the storyline is what makes this film a winner.
“The Hindu” next day carried an article about the film and how the scenes could desensitize one towards rapes but despite this the film is a winner for Vijay Sethupathi. Not graphic or vulgar depictions of rape but the way it is committed and by whom forms an important part of the narration which is disturbing of a different kind.
Full marks to Nithilan Saminathan and team for this one. Must commend Anuragh Kashyap for his acting too. Nithilan handled Anuragh very well in the film.
Go for it. It is streaming on Netflix.
