Former NBA Player Gerald Madkins Becomes Knicks New Assistant GM
The Knicks have another new face in the front office.

Days after bringing on Steve Perry to become their new general manager, the Knicks have more new blood to put the team on the right path.
James Dolan and company pegged Gerald Madkins, former L.A. Clippers assistant GM, as their guy. After a career on campus at UCLA, Madkins played in the NBA for a total of three seasons, bouncing from Cleveland to Golden State. He sprinkled in other professional trips as well, playing in the Continental Basketball Association, ACB, and LNB Pro A. Upon retirement, he began his post-basketball career on the sidelines, coaching Stanislaus State and UCLA before undergoing other ventures in scouting and executive positions.
This won’t be Madkins first involvement with the orange and blue. He served as a player scout for the Knicks for a few years before continuing to scout for the Seattle Supersonics (R.I.P.) and the Houston Rockets. In 2010, he joined up with the New Orleans Hornets (also R.I.P.) as their Vice President of Player Personnel, a position that propelled him to the Clippers position that he just left behind him. With the Clippers, he served as the director of basketball operations, director of scouting, and the assistant GM job beginning in 2015–16.

With the Knicks looking to trade Carmelo Anthony, and with the rumors swirling around one Kyrie Irving, it’s reassuring to see the front office begin to take shape. It’s unclear how involved Madkins was with the decision making process of the Clippers, who notoriously would bring on cheap veterans at the expense of developing young talent. Doc’s drawn the ire of plenty of jokes. Nevertheless, Madkins has a strong experience with the inner machinations of the NBA, and should be a good addition to the Knicks’ brass.
The position of assistant GM was filled by Allan Houston, so his status with the team is up in the air at this point. Whether he is in for a demotion or perhaps a reassignment, his shifting role on the team will be a side effect of this transaction. We will never truly see the ramifications of these types of moves because so much of the action goes down behind the scenes, but securing people that have experience in the league outside of the Dolan cronies is always a positive sign. Welcome, Mr. Madkins.
