Close to the 3pm ET NBA trade deadline the Knicks thought they had a deal in place that would send Ricky Rubio to New York and Derrick Rose to Minnesota. Nevertheless, the trade fell through, and the Knicks will go into the last third of the season with the same roster as before the deadline.

First, around twenty minutes before the trade deadline, The Vertical’s Shams Charania reported that Minny and the Knicks trade talks stalled.

Seemingly a trade centered around Rose was the priority for New York and the only prominent prospect of something happening Thursday afternoon. By the 3pm deadline, there was still no word on what the Knicks and Timberwolves were doing, presumably because the two teams could not come to an agreement over Rose and Rubio.

Approximately a half an hour after the deadline (where potentially deals are still being reported on), ESPN’s Marc Stein tweeted that at one point the possible Rubio-Rose trade was a straight-up swap of point guards.

So with that trade proposed it appears that the Wolves’ head coach and GM Tom Thibodeau balked at the offer, weighing a reunion with Derrick Rose over sending Rubio packing. Ultimately, Thibs remained with his Spanish point guard.

The Knicks will head into the last stretch of the season with their roster completely intact, including the expiring contracts of both their point guards, Rose and Brandon Jennings. What direction will the Knicks go in the near future? They’ll have questions to answer at the guard position, potentially drafting a point guard with their 2017 first round pick.

In the meantime, the ‘Bockers have 25 games left and a decision to make on contending for a playoff spot (nope) or lose, and upgrade their ability to secure a higher lottery pick.

They can start that process by losing to the LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight!
