Ever since John Thompson III was fired on March 23rd, we’ve been hearing rumblings that the Hall of Fame center could potentially be Thompson’s successor. This afternoon, it all came to fruition.

Georgetown’s all-time leading rebounder and shot blocker isreturning to the school where he lead his team to three championship game appearances, including one national title. Ewing is revered down in D.C., and instantly restores championship pedigree to a Georgetown team that has been lousy over the last couple of seasons and has not reached a Final Four since 2007. Expect the Hoyas to improve dramatically next season and return to contending in the Big East.

Ewing is the definition of someone who has “paid their dues.” Not only is he a top-10 center of all time, he’s been an NBA assistant since 2002. It’s about damn time Patrick got his opportunity, after being overlooked by so many organizations, including the New York Knicks. Ewing’s basketball expertise coupled with his ample experience on the sidelines will bode well for him in terms of recruiting and running a disciplined program. Undoubtedly, Ewing is more than qualified to run a basketball team and quite frankly should have received a shot in the NBA years ago.

Regardless, it is flat out awesome to see a former Knick stud and all around great dude to finally get his chance to further grow his basketball legacy.

Another reason why the hiring of Patrick Ewing is just so refreshing as a fan is because you love to see legends flourish and get a chance to do big things post-playing career. In the Knicks case, they don’t have a very good history of treating their former players with genuine gratitude and have often alienated them to a point that angers fanbase; the whole Charles Oakley saga being one example. Us fans love Oakley and probably love Patrick even more. He is put on a pedestal by fans, as he should be, so it is great news to see him land a coaching gig and not have to be contaminated by the current disaster that is the Knicks upper management.

In a time where the best Knicks news we have to write about is when they lose, it is awesome to step out of the box a little bit and congratulate an all time great Knick on the next chapter of his life and on a job that he hopefully excels at. Hats off to Patrick Ewing, Georgetown picked the right man for the job.

P.S., I’d also like to thank New York’s own arrogant, self-proclaimed sports Jesus for blessing us with another one of his bold (completely wrong) predictions:
