It doesn’t matter where you go in the world, when people think of Scotland, they think of the kilt.

However, the crazy thing is, despite what the film Braveheart would have us believe, the kilt is a relatively recent phenomenon, and rather than being linked to Scottish independence, it more has its roots in an English industrialist, a dictator wannabe King, and fiction.

The origins of the kilt

Nobody knows for definite when the kilt was invented, but the first iteration of it, the Great Kilt, is believed to have evolved in the 16th century out of an outfit called the plaid — basically a wool cloak, most often worn over a tunic.
