Immigration is a hot topic these days, especially with Donald Trump back in charge. But even without him, it would be a hot topic. It would be easy to blame racism and cultural prejudice for this, the latter probably more than the former.

Both inevitably play a part in the present anti-immigration narrative. However, putting the blame solely on those factors is a mistake.

This is because there are legitimate reasons why many, especially those in the more deprived and poorer communities, are turning so venomously against immigration, and if we are to get the narrative back on track, we need to start acknowledging this.

With that said, to understand the problem, we need to first talk about where illegal immigrants and refugees mostly end up after arriving in a Western country.
