As the weather in Berlin hovers consistently at just above freezing, the post-holiday blues are setting in. The grey months of January and February will challenge even the most optimistic, forward-looking of people to stay motivated. Luckily for Berliners, some fantastic events are taking place in the city this January. From dance to music and visual arts, these events are sure to keep us warm and uplifted until the spring sets in. Here’s our selection of the most noteworthy events set to take place in Berlin this month.

British Shorts

British Shorts Festival Berlin

Between the 11th and 17th of January, the 11th annual British Shorts festival will be hosting screenings of, as the name suggests, British short films. The screenings take place in a selection of arthouse cinemas across the city, making for a unique, relaxed atmosphere. In addition to daytime films, the festival will feature a midnight showing of short horrors and a selection of concerts by local musicians.

Berlin Fashion Week

Berlin Fashion Week

This winter’s Berlin Fashion Week will be taking place between the 16th and 19th of January. With a great line-up of designer showcases, trade shows and exhibitions, this is an event that no Berlin fashionista should miss. We’re particularly excited for the shows of local designers such as Irene Luft and Ewa Herzog. Plus, as always, we can’t wait for the biannual ProjektGalerie sample sale, in which 30 German and international designers will be putting the contents of their storerooms up for sale at bargain prices.

From Monet to Kandinsky

Visions Alive Monet to Kandinsky

Vision Alive’s From Monet to Kandinsky exhibition has been extended until June by popular demand. This stunning show features projected animations of the works of 16 modernist painters, including Monet, Van Gogh, Klee and Malevich. Lean back in a beanbag as great 20th century paintings come to life on 7 metre tall HD screens. We can’t think of a more romantic winter date.

International Green Week Berlin

International Green Week Berlin

Head to the Messegelände in Berlin-Westend between the 19th of 28th January for International Green Week Berlin. At this event, you’ll be able to get an inside look at new eco-friendly businesses, products and methods. Local and international producers will be presenting samples of their products, including fresh produce, beers and wines. There will also be workshops and activities available for grownups and families alike.

Berlin Philharmonic Lunchtime Concerts

Berlin Philharmonic

Join the Berlin Philharmonic in the foyer of the Philharmonie building for a lunchtime concert on any Tuesday at 1 pm. The programmes last between 40 and 50 minutes and often feature guest performers. What a perfect way to get away from the stresses of the workday and take some time out to relax.

Hopefully, with all that to look forward to, you won’t be left out in the cold this winter.
