The most unexpected person tells us our truth

Much was available, more taken away.
I kept looking at, what I got, and what l lost.
This did not include me at any time ever.
Without knowing, I was getting and losing others.
I had wealth, women, and wine, but not myself.
One night alone, after all, was lost,
I thought the self to be worthless.
On the street,
I met a poor old man…
