Cold outside
Cold inside
Cold within

Furnace insufficient against this type of cold
Hot drinks bring no relief
Layers of warm clothing make no dent
Feels like parts of me close to fissure
In danger of breaking off completely
Lassitude beckons
Sleep’s seductive call is hard to resist

Must shift my focus before it is too late
What is that tiny glow over there
Ah the smile on a child’s face
Kindles an ember so long dormant
Has almost been forgotten
But this flame needs much more fuel
If it is to grow into something meaningful

An older couple
She using a walker
He a cane for support
They pause for a moment
He rests his free hand on top of one of hers
Looking into each other’s eyes
Content to be together
To have this moment
