A Tale of Two Salaries: Chapter Five
Mom was aware of the New Year party at Heath’s, as I casually dropped it into the conversation during the Christmas food shop in the Pick ‘n Pay, a couple of days after Heath and I met up.
The timing was right as she was merrily ticking off finding everything for her menu, with excitement rather than misery. I shook my head at the excess in the trolley and let Mom be, it was the one festive day she wanted all the trims.
I bought extra Fizzers, Jelly Tots, Steri Stumpie milkshakes, Licorice Allsorts, and packets of Ghost Pops for Jenny and told her those were for her party with Granny in a few days. I just had to try to not eat and drink all my childhood favorites before then!
I think Mom actually became quite excited by the 30th of December, speaking of putting a tent outside for Jenny to camp around in. I was so nervous on the other hand, thinking of being away from Jenny, what time I would get back, what it would be like around Heath and his family.
On the morning of the 31st, I reminded Jenny that she was going to have a sleepover with Granny, Grandpa, and the dogs. At first, she seemed happy about it, but the day was long and by lunchtime, she was asking if she could go with me.
