It seemed like my trip with Tom never happened… or happened a century ago. We were back in our old groove, trying to steal small amounts of time for the two of us while still keeping up with our daily responsibilities. Whenever I began grumbling that I wanted more time together, I’d hear from Mr. Sunshine,

“Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

I would then respond,

“Can we grow fonder at four?”

Of course, I missed the sex, but what I missed even more was just spending relaxed time in the same proximity. We could read quietly, side by side, take a break, have a snack, go for a walk, or listen to an interesting podcast. They were simple pleasures of being near each other, and Tom missed them, too, but he led with gratitude.

“Ellie, I am thankful that our relationship is for real. Hopefully, we will share a long life together as a family. Many pleasures and time together await us.”

This time, I quickly interjected, “Don’t forget Nellie is included.”

Now that Tom was in training, he’d never forget Nellie. On odd days, Tom would say, “I’m coming your way to take a walk with Alfred and Joey…
