A tiny speck of light pierces the dark void
From whence did it come
A natural source or artificial
Does it portend something greater to come
Or will this sparkle soon fizzle out
Consumed by the brooding heaviness of night

Surely it would be folly to expect more
That this time would be different
Crushing disappointment would certainly follow
If one were to
Dare I even utter the word
Hope

That word has long suffered from disuse
People reluctant to even whisper it
Beaten down by the oppressive rule of the prevailing power
That has lasted as long as the eldest among us can remember

In the past some looked to a now forgotten deity for deliverance
Others to the coming of a mythic hero
Whether native-born or from afar
Unclear in the legends

So why now do so many see a small but distinct lightening
In what has been the all encompassing miasma
That has gripped the land for ages
There are no reports…
