Children in Snow

I see the children
As they leave the brick and glass school structure
A symbol of order and regiment
A place of education and goals and plans

As they leave, they scatter in different directions
Some walk home
Some to a bus
In groups
And pairs

They trounce and track
Through the snow
Having peered outside all day

Eager to get to it
To feel it
To kick it
To throw it

Sliding
Rolling
Stuffing
Down the coat collar
Of a friend

Laughter ensues
Joy in the fluff
And the slush

And a sense of relief to be free in it
A feeling of elation
In this fading vestige of childhood

Snowmen
Sleds
Forts
Shoveling for money
