Poem — the night
How the night imprisons us until we see the dawn
like rain, it pours down upon us and leaves no shadows
the sun frizzling into our bones by day, our bodies fraught with energy
we listen to the pitched chirps of birds wishing we could stay to listen,
again imprisoned
taking on daytime challenges, zipping through our food
someone makes us smile and we no longer scowl at the day
we finish our work pleased that schedules are over, we can
sit and rest, no longer chained to the stance of gravity
when night returns, we lift our heads, momentarily free and grateful for all that came
we remember the good times now imprinted, our souls bearing no resemblance to yesterday
today was our song, and tomorrow bears no weight
the night shares tenderest moments if only for a while before its gentle capture
we willingly give in to its chains and the day fades only to come back to us
it covers our world, our bodies, our beds, our lives
giving us rest, and when we can’t sleep, it gives us the quiet we need
