The Mourning Dove

A poem

In the case of grief, seeing a dove may be a sign that spiritual love surrounds you. Embracing its presence can be cathartic.

Mourning dove
Light grey
Pinkish breast —
Three times now upon my deck.
Land on the rail,
Love
Wait to be sure,
Dove

Three tiny steps
Three tiny toes

Dip down and scan
Kind, black orbs survey
Left
right
As he smells my potted oregano
Bee balm and
Basil —
Camera-shy —
Click.
He darts back to the birch tree at the base of the yard —
And coos —
(Faintly melodic)
Whispers hypnotic.

Three times here.
Three times gone.
Three trills in his mournful song.
