You part a tepid martyr.
On a frigid Monday morning, it’s cold
going on your lackluster departure
for a fool’s gold.
Because El Dorado will not find you
when your bills are due.

It’s lunch now.
Chicken Kung Pao.
“Don’t take too long,”
sings the corporate man’s song.
“You should eat at your desk,
it’s less of a mess.”
You ponder if your existence
will be as dry as this
TikTok recipe
that you made
sensibly.

So, the workday ends.
But a passing sale transcends.
Count your pennies 1, 2, 3.
Will Klarna* set you free?
You decide to postpone.
It’s time for your sad train home.

You join the sad people,
on a sad day,
with a sad drizzle rain.
You get in your sad house,
with your sad meal,
put on your sad reality TV,
and wish you won the lottery.

Money is unaware of your fortune;
it only sings the corporate whistler’s tune.
For a sparkling jewel.
A mansion and a swimming pool.
A lover à la mode.
A Deliveroo* without a discount code.
But how will that deliver you?
What can you count on?
Who will you become?

*Klarna is a buy now, pay later service in the UK that lets you split the payments of your purchase over monthly installments.

*Deliveroo is a UK food delivery app like Ubereats.

Thanks for reading!
