We Were Nothing
A free verse poem
We weren’t one soul.
We weren’t two lost halves.
We weren’t love poems.
We weren’t destruction or ruin.
We were just two shadows
wading through our mundane lives,
making sense of our
inner worlds, trying to roll
in the same mud every day.
We felt lit, but we couldn’t scorch.
It was I who was overwhelmed
and labeled us.
The truth is, we were nothing.
And I hope we never cross paths
ever, ever, ever again.
