World’s first ad campaign deployed to the Bitcoin Cash blockchain
Yesterday 10000 Bitcoin Cash HODLrs woke up to a new transaction in their wallet.
Whether they manage their own keys, or they have an account with someone like Coinbase, thousands of people received a mysterious message alongside 1000 satoshis (or about €0.004028) of BCH.
The message read:
memopay|Cyberian Mine..Winter is coming|
and it was the start of the first ever advertising campaign to be written directly to the Bitcoin Cash blockchain.
It’s permanent, immutable, uncensorable — basically it’s there for ever. And the reaction has been…
..positive!

We asked Valentin a few questions about the work
You just helped Cyberian Mine publish the world’s first advertisement campaign direct to the Bitcoin Cash blockchain, how did you come up with the idea?
memopay initially started as an extension to the memo.cash social network.
It allows people to send funds to any BCH address outside of the memo.cash network (which was not possible before).
One day, one of the memopay users from the BCH community asked if there was a way to add a note to the payment.
The question made me think that adding a note to payments might be a good opportunity for companies to communicate with potential customers. So, together with Yulia Korovina we have decided to launch such a service.
What’s your experience in the Blockchain space before you started working on memopay?
I’ve been interested in blockchain technology for a long time.
I believe that blockchain is a civilisation-changing technology.
My interests span from academical topics like consensus algorithms to blockchain-based bots that could operate as “autonomous organisations” and practical use cases like bitcoin lending and payment processing.
I’m trying to be an active member of the bitcoin community, contribute to interesting projects and spread the word about them.
How do you compare Bitcoin vs Bitcoin Cash? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of both, and what do you see for the future of both coins?
BTC and BCH both grew from Satoshi Nakamoto’s white paper “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” and before August 2017 they were a single currency.
I think everyone should think for oneself and I’m not going to impose my thoughts on them.
The Pros and cons of each currency can be different for everyone and vary depending on use cases. Nevertheless both BTC and BCH are very important for worldwide adoption of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
The message: memopay Cyberian Mine..Winter is Coming accounted for around 10% of all BCH transactions yesterday. What has been the reaction to the campaign so far?
I can describe reaction to the campaign in 2 words: supportive and positive.
This campaign has been a win-win situation for all involved parties: for the community it’s important to have new use cases for real business and increase amount of transactions, for people who unexpectedly received money — it was a nice surprise and an interesting experience.
How did you get in contact with Cyberian Mine? What do you think of their mining offer in Siberia?
I knew Max before Cyberian Mine’s foundation and I’m happy to see the company growing. Mining in Siberia has it’s competitive advantages: climate and low electricity costs. And Cyberian Mine offer these advantages to it’s clients.
Now that you have launched this campaign, what are you next plans with memopay?
I’m going to develop this service and attract new clients.
And how was it for Cyberian Mine?
Well we saw a 50% spike in organic and direct traffic in the last couple of days. Our baseline of traffic isn’t particularly high though — although our conversion rate is pretty tasty, but we didn’t get any direct customers telling us they saw the message in their transaction and suddenly wanted to buy a preinstalled ASIC with us just yet.
We’re happy to be part of a potentially new use case on the blockchain, and it’s been fun seeing the reactions on Reddit and Linkedin.

What do you think will be going on for Cyberian Mine in 10 years time when we can still read this message on the Blockchain?
Nobody knows, but let’s hope we will be a great international crypto-holding, like Huobi with our HQ in Siberia. :)
