Early chapter books are plentiful. Many of them have brightly colored covers sprinkled with glitter. Mermaids, fairies, unicorns — even unicorn fairies! For girls, the options are seemingly endless.

It’s a little more tricky to find books that are a good fit for boys — especially books that will kick start their reading journey and help them fall in love with reading.

The books listed below all contain a boy appeal factor — from everyday life to fantastic beasts. As with many books for beginning readers, all books are part of a series. Reading a series helps emerging readers gain confidence, and if they discover a book they like, it encourages them to read more.

Each series has black and white illustrations. Some also contain diagrams to help decode the text. The font used in these books is large and easy to read.

This list sorts the books in order of their reading difficulty. For the most part, as the page numbers increase, the font drops slightly. The sentences and word complexity increase — all steps designed to help readers become more confident.
