For several years DJI has led the amateur drone filmmaking industry with their easy to use Phantom products. But DJI don’t just make inexpensive amateur drones — they’ve also had a high-end range to satisfy the professionals who can’t afford to compromise on quality, or on price.

But now DJI is set to bridge the filmmaking divide between the amateurs and the pros with the Inspire 1 which features a 4K camera that can rotate 360 degrees, and has 18 minutes of flying time.

“We see this as the perfect combination of the Phantom and Spreading Wings series, being able to take off at the touch of a button while simultaneously giving users fine control of the images they capture,” said Frank Wang, DJI’s CEO in a press release announcing the new product.

The Inspire 1 incorporates DJI’s ‘lightbridge’ technology which allows users to stream their drone footage back to the controller at distances of up to 1.7km.

And one of the best features is the new downward facing camera which allows the Inspire 1 to stabilise its position from the ground — meaning you don’t need to have a GPS signal to keep the drone stable. This means you can now fly the drone indoors without having to spend too much time worrying about losing stability.

If you want to invest in a DJI Inspire 1 it will set you back around AUD $4000 but from where I’m sitting it looks like it’s worth every cent.

Here’s a little promo clip from the company featuring everyone’s favourite internet filmmaker Philip Bloom.

I know exactly what I want on my Christmas list…. now I just need to figure out a way to make it happen.
