It happens to us all at some point in our lives. We wake up and realize we are overweight and something has to change. This happened for me on August 22, 2017. After the birth of our second daughter the year before, I was 178lbs. At 5 foot 4 inches, it wasn’t a pretty sight. I was embarrassed to go with my husband and children to our subdivision pool in fear that someone somewhere would actually care that I was overweight. Not that anyone actually said anything to me or reaaally gave two shits that I was overweight. It was just something I needed to change for me. With the help of the Keto diet, I am now 136lbs in under six months.

At some point or another — we are all new. Here are my tips to you on things you should not do and how you will definitely be unpopular in the Ketogenic world.

1. Don’t research anything.

Don’t rely on others to do the work for you. Prior to reaching out and asking for help, make sure you Google your questions. Generally speaking, Google won’t steer you in the wrong direction. There are also plenty of fantastic books such as The Keto Diet The Complete Guide To A High-fat Diet by Leanne Vogel.

2. Join a group and ask the same question that was just asked above or below your question.

Browse various support groups for additional questions you may have. Facebook offers support groups by the thousand. Prior to asking a questions, I use the search bar within the support groups by using keywords to see if the topic in question has been brought up. 9/10 times, it has, and someone has provided an answer.

3. Simply repeating, “I do not understand.”

Instead of repeating, “I do not understand” sit and think about what you do not understand. Is it the way things are being worded? Why it is confusing and why there is a misunderstanding to begin with? If you are still confused, ask for help.

4. Whine about not losing weight or inches — daily. “I started this WOE a week ago and I’m not losing weight every day.”

Weight loss doesn’t happen over night — it also doesn’t happen daily. If you just started, remember, this is a lifestyle change. Changes take time. Weight loss and fat loss happen differently for everyone.

5. Constantly asking if you can eat a certain food group.

The Ketogenic diet is a low carb, high-fat, adequate protein, and low sugar diet. Stop asking if you can eat rice, pasta, wheat, and sugar. Don’t focus on what you can’t have, but instead on what you can have! Example, you can’t have mashed potatoes with your steak. However, you can eat asparagus fried in butter, bacon, and paramesan cheese with your steak.

6. Don’t even give it the “Good ol’ College Try.”

Don’t give up after a week because you aren’t seeing changes right away. Change takes time.

7. Be an Askhole.

Ask for advice. But, if the advice is good… take it. There are keto veterans out there who know what works. Worst case, you try something new and it doesn’t work for you. But, at least then… you tried it.

8. Compare your loss to someone else’s.

Don’t compare your loss to someone elses. Everyone’s body type is different. This means we all lose and gain differently. Apply what you have learned and find what works for you.
