Becoming Great

How do you become great in this competitive life?

I really don’t think it’s about being great at all. I think life is more than just wanting to be great. I think it goes much deeper and beyond ourselves. I believe that the depth of our foundation in God filters into our day-to-day lives. This is where I believe we start to see tangible productivity and scalable greatness.

What I mean by that is simply giving our best in the little things of life and doing it on a consistent basis — yes, even in the down times and when no one is looking. For someone to become great it takes an intentional action of being others focused, knowing how to work hard, giving with everything you have, and truly being interested in others.

We have to have the ability to talk less and start acting for others on a more consistent basis. Nothing you receive will come easy nor will it come alone. I’ve come up with a few ideas of how to become great in this competitive life.

  1. Give. Be others focused and put the agenda of others before yours. Greed and selfishness will not create luck or real productivity.
  2. Don’t complain. Complaining is the root of being unproductive. People want to start pointing fingers to justify their failures where the root of the problem is in themselves.
  3. Do the little things excellent and without flaw on a consistent basis.
  4. Faith in your actions. You have to be confident in knowing that your actions are the right actions in order to strive for greatness. If there is uncertainty here you will fail in a bad way.
  5. Act like a leader. When situations arise think about how a leader would go about solving or tackling the problem — you’ll find that that way is never about yourself. You must put some skin in the game so that others may benefit in order to strive for greatness.

If you get one thing out of these words it would be that most of the time situations you encounter in life are rarely about yourself; it’s about the people around you. You should not be living this life to win trophies from your superiors or to act in a way that you’re better than your inferiors, but rather to build genuine relationships and character so that one day you might be able to affect someone else to be great.

I truly believe that, it’s not about being great, it’s about doing things that propel others to become great.
