If we only focus on our differences, we lose the chance to bridge our divide.

Four years ago, I made a decision that would have shocked my younger self: I changed my political affiliation from Republican to Independent. Changing political parties wasn’t a decision that I made lightly, and I wrote about my decision at the time in this article:

Since 2020, I have not regretted my choice, but I’ve been sad to see the growing gap between conservatives and liberals. This election season, I am committed to looking for things we can agree on and finding ways to have productive conversations when we disagree.

While thinking about politics, I considered five beliefs of mine that have remained the same.

I am proud to be an American.

I love my country, and I believe patriotism has helped America get through some of the most challenging times in its history. I remember celebrating our 200th birthday in 1976 and finding unity in our country after…
