Kimmel Storms Late Night
First Amendment conversation in America
Cancelation of two comedians late night shows, so what’s the fuss?
The recent “firing” of Jimmy Kimmel (by ABC) has become a cultural red line for the First Amendment conversation in America. It’s been a crazy week, and it’s hard to follow all of the stories surrounding this important issue.
But the best place to start is the bittersweet win, perhaps only a respite, for the comedian Jimmy Kimmel. Jimmy Kimmel Live! returns tonight on ABC, the network that suddenly pulled his show last week at the bidding of Donald Trump.
Fans are happy to see Kimmel return to his show after being shafted — they love this late night comedian. He has built loyalty and trust with his viewers over the years by being honest with his fans. When he returns tonight, I would anticipate he will not return a silenced man. This battle for free speech is just begining.
When his show was axed, even temporarily, viewers, musicians, actors, actresses, journalist, and most importantly, fellow comedians were outraged. Rightfully so. Because this is the very first time a United States president was able to dictate what Americans will hear.
