Letter of Resignation
Wherein I quit the National Association of Political Satirists
TO: I. Ron Knee, President, National Association of Political Satirists
FROM: Dave Martin
It is with great reluctance that I must tender my resignation as a member of NAPS. Believe me, Ron, it was not a decision that I made hastily or lightly.
However, recent history has convinced me that there is little point in trying to satirize America’s current politics. Let’s face it; we are no longer living in a golden age of political satire such as the one we experienced during the first eight years of this millennium with our beloved W.
The decline in satirical material seemed to begin with the election of Obama. It was difficult to make fun of a president who actually seemed presidential and rarely made the missteps so reliably frequent with his predecessor.
Nevertheless, there were enough satirizable targets to keep us working, targets like John McCain, Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin (thank God for Sarah) who tempered the satirical downturn.
Sadly, I can’t keep producing political humor, not because there isn’t enough craziness out there but rather because there’s too much craziness. I can no longer stay ahead of the satirical curve.
