The Ultimate Swing Voter
It’s Mr. Husker from Nebraska
With every passing year, political polls have become more sophisticated and more accurate. Proof of that can be seen in the recent results published by junior pollster We Pick ’Em, Incorporated.
This year, We Pick ’Em was the first to predict that the presidential race would come down to the result in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District.
Nebraska is one of only two states that don’t assign their electoral votes on a winner-take-all basis. Instead, its five votes comprise two from the state at large and one each from its three congressional districts. Maine has a similar format.
“We crunched the numbers early on and saw that the Democratic candidate would take the blue wall states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania,” said the company’s president Mark Ballot. “And that Donald Trump would win Georgia, Arizona and Nevada.”
Given 2020’s results, this likely means the Omaha-based district would decide the entire election. If Harris wins that single Electoral College vote, she wins the election 270 to 268. If Trump takes it, there’s a 269–269 tie which would be decided by the House of Representatives which is controlled by the Republicans who would likely give the election to Trump.
