“We Should Take Care of Americans First!”
If you’re angry about illegal immigrants or foreigners “taking” things from Americans, it’s time for you to wake up.
Last year, I started working at a community center that runs a food pantry serving five coastal Connecticut towns.
These are the kinds of towns where you’d think everyone would be able to afford food and other basic human needs, such as shelter and warmth.
Our food pantry serves over 2,000 individuals, and when I tell people that, I am met with shock and dropped jaws almost every time.
Some people find it hard to believe or even consider that people in their town, their neighbors, are struggling to put food on the table.
If they express shock, I often encourage them to consider what’s going on in their towns.
“Yeah, I’d say at least forty of them are homeless.”
“Homeless?!”
“Oh yeah,” I’ll say. “And it’s really unfortunate because the shelters are already full and it’s starting to get very cold at night.”
In my experience, it makes some privileged people feel embarrassed to realize (and come to the realization right in front of me) that they should be counting their blessings…
