Ellen Greenberg

The Last Day

On January 26, 2011, twenty-seven-year-old educator Ellen Greenberg was found lying in a pool of blood on her kitchen floor. Although she was covered in stab wounds, twenty in all, the medical examiner would ultimately rule that she had died by her own hand. How he came to this conclusion, given the locations and odd angles of the wounds, is perplexing, to say the least.

Ellen had spent the last day of her life in the apartment she shared with her fiancé, Sam Goldberg. Thanks to a blizzard that had blanketed the city of Philadelphia in snow, school was cancelled, giving her an unexpected Wednesday off.

At some point that afternoon, neighbors had allegedly heard the couple arguing. Perhaps to cool down and clear his head, Sam had headed to the building’s in-house gym at 4:50 p.m. He would later recall that Ellen was fine and had shown no signs of being in distress at that time.

When he returned to their sixth-floor apartment a half an hour later, Sam was exasperated to find that someone, presumably Ellen, had engaged the swing lock, barring him from entering the unit. After banging on the door and receiving no response, he had sent her a series of blistering text messages, demanding to be let in.
