What We Do to Our Animal Friends
3 min readApr 20, 2017

Sometimes we protect animals because compassion. When we witness injuries or death of animals, they are weak in our eyes, and we want to protect them.

But objectively speaking, why we do contribution to other species?

Actually, the reason why we protect animals is for ourselves. As we together live on the earth, animals are our crucial friends. We need them.

Biodiversity is important for ecosystem. Every species is necessary for the forest chain. The balance of the ecosystem is delicate, the loss of one link will ruin the whole system. There is a term called ecosystem services, it means every life on earth do interact with the surrounding. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and generate oxygen, which is necessary to our breath. Bees produce honey and human eat it, that is an obvious service. Besides, there are some recessive ecosystem services. For example, bombus pollinates some specific plants, if it dies out, these plants would also become extinct. Because of chain reaction, a problem of one species will make trouble to the whole ecosystem.

In addition, according to the statistics from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, more than 25% of the medicinal prescriptions contain chemical substances from animals. Our present science and technology cannot explore all useful substances we need from animals. Maybe in the future, we will find one essential substances can only abstract from a species, but it is already extinct. Our mistake on wild animals may never be made up.

The loss caused by the extinction of an animal species is not only the disappearance of a species on earth. Although we think that we, human being, would seem to be animal kingdom outsiders, human and animal life is closely related. Plants, animals, people and the environment together constitute a biological community, that is, the ecosystem. We all depend on each other. If a part of such a community is unbalanced or extinct, the whole system will be affected.

Nowadays, we are talking about “protecting the earth”. In fact, as for the earth, no species is “indispensable”. If a species disappears, its position in ecosystem will be immediately replaced. Of course, that may influence other species. We, human being, as a species living in the community, will surely be impacted. The extinction of some species may lead to a large-scale collapse of the ecosystem. However, the collapse is not the end of the earth, tens of millions of years later, everything will come back again. Earth doesn’t care, but we do. we cannot survival from large temperature change, tsunami, or ozone depletion. We even could not survival without bees to pollinate crops.

We should say “thank you” to animals, because we cannot live alone without them. We are living now because they accompany us and form a balanced ecosystem with us.
