Earlier this month, Merriam-Webster dictionary announced its 2017 word of the year, “feminism,” with a flowery pink Instagram post. It was one of the year’s most-searched words, the dictionary said, spiking alongside major news events.

For many of us, “feminism” has long been the word of the year.

2017 has been a year of great change. So we’re closing this chapter with notable stories and posts we don’t want you to miss. At the bottom of this email, you’ll also find a letter from our editor-in-chief and creative director, Amy King, with her reflections.

Dear friends of The Lily,

In the spirit of numbers and reflections:

The Lily has been live for 199 days. We are run by seven women. You can find us on five platforms. And today, we are sending you the 58th issue of Lily Lines.

I have a special place in my heart for our newsletter subscribers. You send us thoughtful, respectful emails. You respond to our call-outs. You participate. Our entire team is thankful, and a little bit in awe. Thank you for letting us know you’re listening. For the story suggestions. For holding us accountable. For pointing out when we miss something. And for applauding us when we get something right. Please keep it up. Knowing we are connecting with you makes the hours we spend on each edition of Lily Lines worth it.

My favorite part of the week is coming up with the newsletter subject line. Do you notice them? Every Sunday and Wednesday, we gather to discuss, at length, what five to 10 words will best represent the story inside the email you’ll get early the next morning. We hope these emails keep you curious.

You have a lot of newsletters to choose from, so thanks for picking ours.

One hundred ninety-nine days in, and this still feels surreal. On we go.
