The Living Room Playlist: Love & Basketball Companion

This is our living room: home court advantage.

House keeping announcements: Release show for the Love & Basketball mixtape is on March 5th at HIVE Vancouver. Details for tickets and performers will be announced shortly.

I’ve told Francis that he’s a living room rapper. His goal for music is for people to take it everywhere they go. The goal with the Living Room Playlist is to give you more music after you’ve exhausted Love & Basketball. The playlist will be 30 songs long by March 5th, with new songs added daily. The first eight songs draw inspiration directly from the eight tracks on Love & Basketball: stylistically, sonically, or an inside joke between Francis and I. Some songs are new, some are favourites, and others are pulled forward from the past. Above all else, it’s a reminder that art and music aren’t in competition with each other. Every song, drawing, or words on a page have their place. I hope you enjoy the playlist and if you’re in Vancouver I hope to see you on March 5th.

Gardens: “Rose Golden” by Kid Cudi ft. Willow Smith

The hook on “Rose Golden” by Kid Cudi ft. Willow Smith off of his latest album Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’ sounds like boots digging into the ground as your current self goes on a quest to discover your best self.

Oh, since I was young, been grooving to my own drum
Ain’t that many teachers show me my potential
Felt like a failure, momma said you know better
Future in my hands, God, she had a plan
Stronger than I know, soon I’d understand
The power I possess, the story of the Chosen
Oh, since I was young, been grooving to my own drum
Ain’t that many teachers show me my potential
Felt like a failure, momma said you know better
Future in my hands, God, she had a plan
Stronger than I know, soon I’d understand
The power I possess, the story of The Chosen

SWOOP: “BodyFeelGood” by Marcus Alan Ward

This song is pure energy. Marcus Alan Ward bends genres to put a pop into your step in the middle of winter.

Fall: Shot Down by Khalid

If I had a vote for 2016’s rookie of the year in music, I’d vote for Khalid. This is his thesis statement on the messiness of love. His debut album American Teen is out March 3rd.

Love & Basketball (Interlude): Carry Me Home (Interlude) by Jorja Smith

For the fam, women, and chosen.

A Very Solid Song (Draft Day): Trophies by Drake

I could’ve been lazy and just slotted Drake’s “Draft Day” in this spot. Laziness would never get two thumbs up from Leigh Ellis. Besides, Francis likes “Trophies” more.

#sofargonechallenge: Bonita Applebum by A Tribe Called Quest

I know what you’re thinking, “First no original ‘Draft Day’ and now no Chance on the challenge he started?” I hear you and Chance will appear on this playlist, don’t fret. I have to pay respect to the best rap love song of all time.

He Said: Driving Ms Daisy by Logic ft. Childish Gambino

Everyday Francis and I remind each other to not get ahead of ourselves. And while we are excited for what’s to come and have things planned we can’t look to the future at the expense of the present.

One More Time: Beautiful by ILLClinton

Pigeons and Planes said it best: “This song is the embodiment of Kanye’s ‘Can’t Tell Me Nothing’ line: ‘I’m on TV talking like it’s just you and me.’” Francis and The Lions We Are isn’t a band, it’s a team and we want you to be a part of it.
