Chapter One

Edna Simmons walked into the kitchen, looking closely at the calendar. The auction was only days away, and she had been waiting impatiently for the day to arrive. “Gertie!” she yelled, addressing her wife who had been in the other room with a newspaper curled up in her lap, snoring. “Gertie!” The other woman didn’t answer, and though she knew that she should just go into the other room and wake her up, her legs were tired, and her body needed a rest. Therefore, she decided to sit down in her chair and relax and continue to address the other woman until she answered.

“Whaat?” Gertie yelled back, clearly annoyed.

Edna heard the newspaper fall off her wife’s lap and onto the floor and smiled, knowing that she had successfully gotten Gertie’s attention.

“What do you want?” Gertie asked, coming into the kitchen, her hair standing up on one side.

“I wanted to ask you about my jewelry,” Edna replied, batting her eyelashes at the other woman. “Why the temper?”

“I don’t know,” Gertie replied. “Maybe, it’s because every time I go to take a nap, I hear a constant squawking in my ear.”

“You know, you should really get that checked out,” Edna said, smiling. “Maybe, we can go to the ear doctor with some of…
