Ogre’s have layers but so do people! I like to think that the movie Shrek is a perfect way to understand the characteristics of the introvert and the extrovert in all their layers. Perhaps Shrek was an introvert himself, often misunderstood by others.

The extrovert

Extroverts are much like cake! People love cake, as Donkey stated in the movie. Cake has layers to it, very similar to that of an extrovert. The vibrant colours of the cake can be inviting which could be compared to the outgoing personality of the extrovert. Cake is a familiar and relatable food, it brings people together. Cake is pleasing to the eye and so is being straightforward as extroverts tend to be. You could say that cake thrives in a crowd the way extroverts do. People love the extrovert because they are more open and make people feel seen, sometimes flattered.

Being an extrovert is often preferred in Western culture. A lot of the time being considered the better personality.

The introvert

But not everyone has a sweet tooth, some people have a more savoury palette!

I will now introduce to you the introvert, whom I feel has similarities to the onion. Onions, much like introverts often get a bad rap. People sometimes can find introverts rude or arrogant because of their silence the same way people don’t like onions for their reputation of making people cry. People find onions boring or stinky — introverts are often thought of as dull and even slow-witted but it’s quite the opposite. Introverts are the most creative and productive when they are alone. Onions happen to be an extremely versatile food but we don’t stink and we try not to make people cry.

Introverts need time to become comfortable and open up, so give them a chance before you write them off as no good, because if you do — you might be missing out on a potential relationship. Introverts much like the onion need to be peeled back one layer at at a time to get to the good parts. I get what Shrek was saying, that people judge him before they even get to know him. But in the end, Introverts are not onions or even ogres — they are people who function differently.

Conclusion

Despite the introvert’s and extrovert’s differences, they often complement each other. The two together, whether in a friendship or romantic relationship seem to balance each other out. I am an introvert myself and my husband is an extrovert. He brings the laughter and I bring the tranquillity.
