Address your negative thoughts…

What did you think? For instance, you thought,

“So-and-so is a liar.”

Immediately after this thought, you might think,

“No, there’s no such thing. I can’t think so badly of them; they are very good people. Where did this idea come from?”

There’s no need for this. Take that negative thought and write it down.

“So-and-so is a liar.”

Write it down and try to analyze it:

Are they really liars?

Why did I call them a liar?

Why did I use this expression?

Maybe something personal happened between you and them; they couldn’t keep a promise they made or were late for an appointment.

On that day, your greedy ego, which wanted to have everything and be victorious in everything, was offended at that moment. In short, it could not get what it wanted, i.e., it couldn’t win.

Your ego must act against that individual to compensate and defend itself. Thus, it might say,

“So-and-so is an unreliable, deceitful person.”

to compensate for the situation.

In this way, realizing how a negative thought is formed is necessary.

This is the essence of “realization”; it is a beautifully organized type of conscience examination.

Whether it is suffering or happiness, whether it is positive value or negative value, we need to find ways to face events openly.

If we cannot do this, if this conflict begins to continue in our subconscious, some psychological problems will begin to occur.

The best way is to express this conflict and carry it out in a lively manner under the light of consciousness.

Thinking about one’s own interests at the expense of others and expecting to be happy is self-deception.

True happiness is achieved by helping and loving people unconditionally.

However, in practice, the exact opposite is true for people.

People move with the slogan “great happiness”. They want to be happy, but they never want to give up their pride and selfishness. The other side doesn’t want to give up either.

So, who will make whom happy?

Since no one can make anyone else happy, people cannot be happy.

Ergün Arıkdal
Excerpt from the book Yaşamın Amacı Kendini Bilmek/The Purpose of Life is to Know Yourself

Just do right. Right may not be expedient, it may not be profitable, but it will satisfy your soul. It brings you the kind of protection that bodyguards can’t give you. So try to live your life in a way that you will not regret years of useless virtue and inertia and timidity.

Take up the battle. Take it up.

It’s yours. This is your life.

This is your world.

- Maya Angelou
