Success does not necessarily mean chasing ambitious goals based on recognition, fame, and money. As a matter of fact, success as a term should not even be represented by those principles, although it often is. On the contrary, it should be associated with doing the things you love and achieving things that make you and other people happy.

It’s even better when you get the recognition for it, as it can be an excellent way for more people to realize that you don’t need to chase someone else’s dreams in order to be happy and satisfied with your life.

With that being said, today you’ll meet a successful person, but not your typical entrepreneur/businessman.

Nicolae Berbece is a game designer, who turned his passion for games in a successful company. The name of the business he and his team built from scratch perfectly describes them “Those Awesome Guys”. They truly are awesome, and the interview I made with Nicolae gives a fun and refreshing viewpoint on “succeeding in life”.

It’s also important to mention that Nicolae Barbece’s work was recognized by Forbes, and Those Awesome Guys earned him a place on Forbes's “30 Under 30 Europe 2019: Sports & Games list.

I warmly recommend everyone to take a few minutes of their day and read the interview I made with Nicolae.

Bruno (HE) Mirchevski (The Logician):

Hi Nicolae, and thank you for being a part of this mission! Firstly, can you introduce yourself? Who is Nicolae Berbece? How and why did you choose the career that you have today?

Nicolae Berbece:

Hello hello, I’m Nicolae Berbece, a 26 years old self-proclaimed game designer from Romania.

I grew up on sites like Newgrounds playing and modding games, slowly growing my interest in the medium until I got to collaborate with awesome programmers and designers online to create my own games from scratch.

Bruno (HE) Mirchevski (The Logician):

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on being among Forbes 30 under 30! How was that experience for you? What contributed to this success the most?

Nicolae Berbece:

I assume it’s mostly attributed to the success of my game Move or Die, a 4 player friendship ruining party game released on PC in 2016.

It made a bunch of money and it seems that the guys over at Forbes like bunches of money, so I ended up on a list of presumably important people *smiles*.

It makes for a lovely addition in my twitter bio.

Bruno (HE) Mirchevski (The Logician):

Do you mind telling us more about Those Awesome Guys? How did you come up with the business idea? How hard it was for you to find the ‘perfect’ business idea? Why?

Nicolae Berbece:

Those Awesome Guys is the company I created in order to release Move or Die. Turns out, in order to sell a PC game you need a company…

There isn’t much business behind it, I like games, so I work on the kind of games I would like to play, same goes for publishing games developed by other awesome devs.

I don’t like the business aspect of things, I prefer to focus on the creative side of this industry.

Bruno (HE) Mirchevski (The Logician):

For all those who still struggle to find their calling, can you please explain how did you find yours? When did you know this is what you are ‘meant’ to do?

Nicolae Berbece:

I still don’t know what the hell I’m “meant” to do, or if I’m meant to do anything at all?

The goal of our species and collectively humans as a race is to survive, therefore the next step in our evolution will be to colonize other planets.

Smart and important people are busy with working towards that goal while I make silly games to keep them entertained.

Bruno (HE) Mirchevski (The Logician):

How well do you manage your time? What are the best tricks for effective time management? Please explain.

Nicolae Berbece:

I suck at time management, but I actively try to get better. One good trick is to always estimate more time than you’d initially estimate. I would also like to get more into time tracking but that’s a whole different monster to tackle.

I try to optimize every little aspect of my life so everyday tasks take less time and my mind doesn’t get clogged up with meaningless things. Checklist for EVERYTHING. I recommend the podcastCortex” from Relay FM on this topic.

Bruno (HE) Mirchevski (The Logician):

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think being in the gaming industry requires much creative work. Is it true? If so, how do you maintain your creativity? How have you improved your creativity?

Nicolae Berbece:

Weed.

Bruno (HE) Mirchevski (The Logician):

What are the five characteristics that are essential for success? Why? Please explain.

Nicolae Berbece:

Conquest, war, famine, death, and twitter… Fuck if I know, is it written somewhere that there are 5?

Either do what everyone else does and hope you’re fast enough to ride the wave with them or do something completely different in the hopes of standing out.

Both work for different reasons, the cheesy-est and truest advice is “don’t give up”.

Bruno (HE) Mirchevski (The Logician):

What does a successful business look like to you? What is your definition of success generally? Does it always have something to do with work? Why?

Nicolae Berbece:

Given the inherited link between business and capital, a “successful business” is a business that generates profit.

For me, “success” is being able to do what I want to do, which in this case is crafting experiences for people in the forms of games and getting a big-enough audience to potentially make a difference through my weird ideas packed as games.

Bruno (HE) Mirchevski (The Logician):

Where do you see yourself and your company 10 years from now?

Nicolae Berbece:

Answering interview questions. *laughs*

Bruno (HE) Mirchevski (The Logician):

Finally yet importantly, what is your life advice for everyone reading this interview?

Nicolae Berbece:

Stay hydrated and follow me on twitter @xelubest

I hope you enjoyed Nicolae’s sincere and fun answers. At the end of the day, not everything should be so serious, and in life, we need to learn how to have fun.

However, this young man’s success was the product of hard work, the right approach, and creativity merged into an excellent idea.

And remember, in order to be successful, you need to be comfortable with who you are and who you strive to become. So find what makes you and the people around you happy, and go for it!
