- How and Why Do We Limit Ourselves?
- Your Potential Depends on You
How often do you make excuses?
Even if you don’t realize it, most of us make them on a daily basis, whether they are small excuses or much larger that can negatively influence your life.
In reality, every excuse, even the smallest one, represents a step backward and limits you by keeping you in your comfort zone.
We make excuses, and we like our comfort zone.
So much that some of us never leave it. It’s a bubble we are used to and a safe zone that shields us from uncomfortable and scary situations.
I’ve said it many times, your comfort zone is your enemy. You are your enemy. By making excuses and staying in your bubble, you will never fully realize your potential and how much you can achieve if you let go of the fear and anxieties.
But if you give yourself a chance, you might just find out things you didn’t know you were capable of achieving.
How and Why Do We Limit Ourselves?
There are many explanations as to how and why we limit ourselves. From the ways, we were raised to personal circumstances or even a person’s character.
We are all so different from one another, and while some people know what they are ‘destined’ to do and how they are going to achieve this, others might take some time before they realize the meaningful things in their life and how to pursue them.
There are many people around the world that were taught to reach for the stars and explore their lives. Others, as the complete opposite of this, grew up with all sorts of limitations that later transferred to their character.
But how we were taught over the years does not say anything about how much we can learn at this very moment.
So what’s really stopping you?
1. Comfort Zone
Yes, your comfort zone is the first and biggest enemy that’s stopping you from realizing your full potential. The more you stay in it, the harder it will be for you to ever get out.
Doing only the things that feel familiar to us can be a huge mistake, as growth comes with taking your chances and accepting challenges. If you conform to the boundaries set up by your own mind, you conform to a life with no chance of showing your potential to the world.
Get rid of the comfort zone, no matter how good it feels at the moment.
In the long run, this bubble is making more damage than good and it’s sometimes better to be brave and embark on an unfamiliar adventure.
2. A Mindset of a Quitter
It might be hard to admit, but we often quit when things get difficult. Over time, this turns into a familiar pattern and it gets worse with every challenging moment we face in our lives.
If you have the mindset of a quitter you will easily break down when faced with any kind of pressure or some kind of change in your life.
But changes are good, and they help us learn and progress. They are scary, but if you change your mindset, changes can become something you are looking forward to.
So turn your mindset from one that always quits when times get hard, to a mindset that is focused on growth, despite the circumstances.
Remember, you learn both from the good and the bad experiences in life.
3. Failure is Always On Our Mind
Yes, failure is scary and not something you want to deal with. But failure is a part of life and perceiving it as something negative will certainly limit your potential.
If you are afraid to take a step forward because you think you will fail, it’s most likely to never discover just how capable you are.
4. We Follow The Crowd
Not that it’s something necessarily bad, but sometimes following the crowd keeps us always from the things we really want. The fear of being different and unique or just being ourselves in front of others can be a large factor in why and how we limit ourselves.
Let’s be honest, a lot of people really care what others think and what they have to say about them.
We try to pain the perfect image of ourselves, and we often do what the people around us are doing, even though we have different goals and dreams. Then we use this as an excuse and think that there is not more to discover in yourself.
That, however, is not true.
If you don’t feel like doing what others are doing, simply stop with this and start living your own life.
Explore your passion and what makes you feel excited. Then, do your best to learn as much as possible and keep following that goal. It won’t take long before you realize that you continue growing and developing throughout your entire life.
5. We Prioritize The Wrong Things
Finally, one of the more common reasons as to why we limit our potential is the bad management of our priorities.
If something does not make you happy, then that’s not a priority.
Of course, we have to do things that we don't enjoy doing from time to time, but don’t let them become more important than the things you really care about.
If you want to read, for example, always take time during the day for this activity. Even in moments when you have a ton of responsibilities, take at least one hour per day to what makes you really happy.
Stimulating your brain with things that inspire positive thoughts and emotions, will make it much easier for you to expand your views and break the barriers that keep you away from your potential.
Your Potential Depends on You
Your potential is not something that is given to you, but something that you must explore and expand.
Potential is what got you here in the first place. However, even if you achieved many meaningful things in your life, that’s not a reason to stop there. Imagine how much more you can do, if you don’t limit your character and obtain a growth mindset.
In other words, if you lose the fear, the excuses, and start doing better decisions in your life, you will notice how your views on the world around you change as well.
If you stop limiting your character, you will be more eager to learn, and you won’t be afraid to make a change in your life or accept the challenges it brings.
If you embrace the fact that the only limits are the ones you set up for yourself, you will finally see your full potential.
Instead of fearing challenges, embrace them.
They are your best way to fully discover your capabilities and how much you can achieve if you simply believe in yourself and have a growth-oriented mindset.
You will never go beyond the limitations of your character unless you decide otherwise.
So, embrace growth and keep learning and progressing. You never know what is awaiting you and the future, and you should be excited to find out.
