Flight (Chapter 3)
- Sir… Sir?
Sorry, what was I saying?
- You seem contemplating. If you don’t mind may I ask what were you thinking?
Humans are really beautiful, that’s what I was thinking. The deeper I learned about them the more I was astonished. They had, and still have, imagination that no other creatures have; especially your kin. You have nothing but logic
- You have a point there, Sir.
That’s why you were mesmerized with the things people built and went to Earth many many times.
- Yes, Sir. We have good diplomatic and touristic relationship between humans almost for a century now but; my folk still are little frightened of their unmeasured imagination.
Unmeasured… That’s a good word to determine but not enough. I would also say fearless. Pay attention to this! I said fearless but not bold. Being bold includes fear. Human fury also can be quite devastating. They would do anything to achieve or destroy their dreams. I still don’t understand how creating or destroying a dream appear same to them.
At the time we first contacted humans we were just walking on foot around the world for so many years. Because we didn’t have any enemies, till the Knight Age of human, there was no necessity for us to fly. We, dragons are fond of our comfort and flying is exhausting to us. But humans noticed our folded wings and wondered what they are for. Some dragons among us showed them that we can use them to fly.
My cousin was the first to demonstrate this skill, and flew above the heads of humans. I thought that would make men afraid of us and drive them back to the faraway lands they came from. On the contrary they wanted to fly with us. We had attended to their hunger and cold; they were well-fed and warm and now they could turn their attention towards new things.
Those first days were beautiful. Humans became our kittens. Always curious and always up to something. After fifty years of living with them I was convinced to fly with one on my shoulders. That was new to me; carrying something upon my back. At first I was anxious to bring back my human safely to earth without delay, I didn’t took off so high. But after several attempts, I grew comfortable with a creature on my shoulder and I flew higher and higher.
I will never forget the first human I flew with. It was a female named Armada. She was eager to fly because everything was new to her. Every time we flew, she got more excited to see the world from above; flying between clouds was a fantasy to her. She was pointing her finger at things she saw from above and yelling with excitement. Her excitement and joy tempted me to fly more. All things I was bored about flying became new adventures to me and changed the way I saw and interpreted things on earth.
We flew long hours together. We flew with migratory birds, we flew above the clouds, we flew through the canyons and we flew behind cascading waterfalls. We chatted freely during our trips and became close friends.
She was the first one who is very dear to me beside my kin. After all those years and bad memories with humans, only reason I still find humans beautiful is Armada.
