Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff — they comfort me. — Psalm 23:4

Almost 100 feet below the Hudson River is the Holland Tunnel. Opened in 1927 — after 7 years of construction — the tunnel enables thousands of people to drive between Lower Manhattan and New Jersey. Without traffic, it takes nearly three minutes to travel through the 8,000 foot long tunnel. This means that for most of your journey through the tunnel, you cannot see either side. No light at the end of the tunnel, just a dimly lit road as far as you can see. However, every tunnel has an end, even if you can’t see it yet. Keep moving forward long enough and you will make it to the other side.

Some seasons in life can be like traveling through a long dark tunnel. You look forward, and you do not see an end; you look back and you can no longer see the beginning. These seasons can be scary, frustrating, and seemingly endless.

During these times, it can be helpful to remember that we are not alone. There are other people who have gone through, and are going through, whatever you are experiencing. Look to the ones who have made it through that season as proof that there is an end. If you can, find them and ask them for wisdom and guidance. Also, take comfort in knowing that Jesus will never abandon you. He is available to you anytime through prayer and scripture, and is faithful to walk with you through this season.

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.
— 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT)

So keep moving forward — in faith — one day at a time. Even though you may not be able to see it yet, there is a light at the end of every tunnel. And you’ll get there one step at a time.

Be strong and courageous; don’t be terrified or afraid of them. For the Lord your God is the one who will go with you; he will not leave you or abandon you.
— Deuteronomy 31:6
