I had the privilege of attending the AI project presentation of the students taking up Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS) at the Asian Institute of Management-Aboitiz School of Innovation, Technology, & Entrepreneurship last August 23, 2019.

Machine learning is, indeed, an art as evidenced by the students’ respective artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) project presentations before a group of professors, peers, and other data scientists. The class had about 60 students, composed of Latin awardees, as well as master’s and doctor’s degree holders.

This 14-month, intensive course is designed to produce data science experts. Students keep themselves abreast of the latest trends and best practices in the field — from data mining and exploration to machine learning, deep learning, and big data analytics.

Aside from technical skills, these future data scientists are also being taught to develop effective communication skills to properly present data-driven insights that maximize business impact. They also make sure that the scientists they train will engage with decision makers and help organizations solve problems, not just receive instructions and solve technically.

Here are some of the AI projects the students presented:

  1. A World Without Borders: An Image Classification Approach on Hand Sign Languages
  2. BAYBAYIN: Filipino Culture in Ink. Reviving the Lost Filipino Script Using ML Models
  3. The Loan Ranger: Rounding up Errant Payments
  4. IEEE-CIS Fraud Detection: Benchmarking ML Models on a Challenging Large-Scale Dataset
  5. Which Came First? Chicken or Egg? Predicting Stock Market Movements Using Commodity Prices
  6. In Banks We Trust: Predicting the Propensity to Avail of Formal Financial Services in the Philippines
  7. Crazy Rich Traders: Machine Learning Predicts XAU-USD Forex Trend
  8. Bakuna ng Bata: A Behavior Prediction Model for Better Health
  9. Predicting Illegal Drug Vulnerability of a Community
  10. Blockbusting the Box Office: A Machine Learning Approach to Movie Revenue Prediction
  11. UnWrappler: Unrappling Textual Identity
  12. Fact or Feeling? Determining Objectivity of News and Opinion Pieces
  13. Redefining Poverty in the Philippines
  14. Extensive Study on Conspicuous Activity Recognition for Goods Shipment
  15. From Frustration to Optimization: Fixing the MRT’s Journey Through ML Models
  16. LIPAD: Localized and Intelligent Predictor of Airline Delays

The students did a great job in coming up with these interesting projects that will surely be useful for both the government and the private sector. We witnessed their amazing presentations on how to predict flight delays, loan collections, vaccine schedule for children, and the use of AI to predict and stop fraud, among others. These projects are intended to solve some of our society’s problems with the use of AI and ML.
