How can an ordinary, non-technical person exactly explain a technical topic non-technically? Let me give it a try as I learned about coding at the recently concluded two-day conference, organized by John Clements Consultants, last September 5 & 6, 2018. Professor Ikhlaq Sidhu, faculty director and founder of Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology at UC Berkeley, shared his knowledge and expertise on topics related to the theme, Applied Analytics for Competitive Advantage: Data Strategies for Disruptive Impact.

Let us all start with data — it’s everywhere. It’s as simple as a name on your computer, a number on your phone, or an address in your database. It doesn’t matter whether you have a lot or a few, what matters is the quality. With the right algorithm, you will be able to come up with something from it. Just imagine what you can do with all the data that you have — you can actually use it to generate information you do not have! This is called prediction, the answer to your uncertainties. Now, how can you predict using data then? It’s probably time to code.

What does coding mean? Coding makes it possible for us to create computer software, applications, and websites. Web browsers, operating systems, Facebook, and this website — they were all created with code. Have you heard of Python, Anaconda, Panda, Jupyter Notebooks, SkyLearn, and many others? These are some of the most common open source tools used in coding. So why does one need to learn it? Learning to code can empower you to do things you never thought you could such as creating your own website and starting a technology business. Most importantly, you will be able to understand the technology that’s currently shaping your world and will definitely help you in the future, as you face problems that probably don’t even exist yet.

Are you ready to code? It may sound challenging, but there are a lot of ways to learn it. There is an abundance of resources available on the internet, including the ones I previously mentioned; all you have to do is download and start exploring. If you want to give it a try, you may start by clicking on the links below, shared by Prof. Ikhlaq during his presentation.
