We kicked off our first provincial recruitment event for 2020 last February 19 to 21 at Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. Day 1 was crazy as our scheduled SuperCat one-hour boat ride was cancelled due to strong winds and waves. We managed to get another ride — a RORO boat which traversed the wave-tossed sea for three hours. Once we arrived safely in Calapan City, we immediately began our job of recruiting candidates that day.

On the side, I was able to secure a courtesy call with the governor of Oriental Mindoro, Gov. Humerlito “Bonz” Dolor. The meeting was scheduled by our recruitment partner, Morris Agudo, president of ICT Mindoro. The first day gave us two successful hires. After work, we welcomed the first timers in Mindoro, Claud and Gina from John Clements, accompanied by Daniel and Khristelle from Intellicare, our client. We went to a live band bar and enjoyed good music and good Filipino food. It was late in the evening when we checked in at the hotel to settle down and rest.

We woke up excited on Day 2. Unfortunately, the number of candidates dwindled that day, although we weren’t expecting this to happen as we were able to promote the recruitment event through text blast and Facebook postings. Nevertheless, we utilized time productively: before noon, Morris and I did another courtesy call, this time with the mayor of Calapan City, Mayor Arnan Panaligan. To my delight, we actually met 30 years ago through my co-worker at my first job, which happened to be his sister. We recalled living in the same subdivision: I carpooled with his sister, and the mayor was the one driving. It was good to see him again after all these years. It was a small world, after all.

After our courtesy call, Morris and I joined the E-Commerce and Fintech event entitled MIMAROPA NATURALLY, hosted by the DTI, at Vencio’s Garden Hotel. It was a great event as we were able to meet representatives from Paymaya and Seedin, among others. We ended the day with a quiet evening at a local restaurant called Porch Café by Mari.

Day 3 started out with a beautiful sunny sky, but by mid-morning it was raining hard. We were able to hire two more candidates, a total of four hires for the entire two-day recruitment event. Morris extended an invitation to stay in Puerto Galera overnight until Saturday, which the John Clements team gladly accepted. The Intellicare team opted to go back to Manila since they had other appointments.

Since we were not beach-ready, we bought extra clothes and swimwear at the local market. We left Calapan City at 4 pm and took the shuttle van going to Puerto Galera. It was a 1 hour and 15-minute trip through zigzagging roads that ended at the Grand Terminal in Puerto Galera, where a shuttle van from Marco Vincent Resort awaited us. Upon checking in at the resort, we walked by the shore, had a few drinks with Morris and friends, and had a good dinner by the beach. We went back to the hotel as the girls decided to call it a night, while I mingled with Mr. Mel Agudo, President of MVSoftech over a bottle of Johnnie Walker Double Black and sisig. We had a lot of stories to tell until half past midnight, then we decided to call it a night.

Saturday morning, our last day in Mindoro, was spent taking pictures on the beach and enjoying the hotel’s pool before eating lunch by the beach. We had so much fun in Puerto Galera that we decided to move our boat trip back to Manila from 11 am to 2 pm.

Overall, this event proved to be tiring but we were rejuvenated by the end of our trip. Thanks to Mel and Morris Agudo for making our stay something to remember.
