The October Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) General Membership Meeting was packed — from the announcement of the new MAP officers for 2020, awarding the MAN of the year, to the interesting narrative of Mayor Isko “Yorme” Moreno about the progress of Manila under his early days after assuming the highest government post in the city. The program was hosted by our very own President and CEO, Ms. Carol Dominguez.

MAP appointed Francisco “Francis” E. Lim, a senior partner at Angara Abello Concepcion Regala & Cruz Law Offices (ACCRALAW), as its 71st President effective January 2020. He is the former President and CEO of the Philippine Stock Exchange and Securities Clearing Corporation of the Philippines. The other officers for 2020 are Aurelio R. Montinola III of Far Eastern University as Vice-President; Benedicta Du-Baladad, founding partner and CEO of Du-Baladad and Associates as Treasurer; Emmanuel P. Bonoan, Vice Chair and COO of KPMG R.G. Manabat Co. as Assistant Treasurer; and John Philip S. Orbeta, Managing Director and Group Head for Corporate Resources of Ayala Corporation as Secretary.

The board of governors include Danilo L. Concepcion, President of the University of the Philippines; Ms. Maria Victoria C. Españo, chair and CEO of P&A Grant Thornton; Dr. Justo A. Ortiz, chair of UnionBank of the Philippines; and Amando M. Tetangco, Jr., board director of Philippine Airlines.

Another interesting announcement was the 2019 “Management Man of the Year”. Under MAP’s stringent selection process, veteran banker Nestor Tan, President and CEO of BDO Unibank, was declared as the awardee. Accordingly, Mr. Tan led the bank’s transformation from niche player to the country’s biggest and most valuable bank. MAP cited the parameters before one can be given this prestigious award: in a nutshell, it is bestowed to an individual with outstanding achievements in the business community and a valuable contributor to society and the country as well.

The following big names were also recipients of this award in the past years: Fernando Zobel de Ayala, Washington SyCip, Geronimo Velasco, Henry Brimo, Jose Soriano, Cesar Virata, Jaime Ongpin, Vicente Paterno, Dante Santos, Cesar Buenaventura, Roberto Villanueva, Jaime Zobel de Ayala, Ramon del Rosario Sr., Jose Fernandez Jr., Raul Concepcion, Oscar Hilado, Alfonso Yuchengco, Juan Santos, David Consunji, Rizalino Navarro, Gabriel Singson, Delfin Lazaro, Henry Sy Sr., Oscar Lopez, Tony Tan Caktiong, Jesus Tambunting, Rafael Buenaventura, Manuel V. Pangilinan (MVP), George S.K. Ty, Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala II, Jose Cuisia Jr., Antonio Aquino, Jesus Estanislao, Lilia de Lima, Ramon del Rosario Jr., Erramon Aboitiz, Aurelio Montinola III, Edgar Chua, Albert del Rosario, Amando Tetangco Jr., Tessie Sy-Coson and John Gokongwei Jr.

Next in the program was resource speaker Mayor Isko Moreno. It was my second time in October to have a close encounter with Manila’s most popular mayor and everyone’s “yorme.” He delivered a very long talk during the event, showcasing what he has done for the city and his other ambitious plans for it, but it was very inspiring. The business community showed interest in supporting the Manila mayor and his plans. People seem to naturally gravitate toward him to show support. It is unnecessary to elaborate since he is all over social media, everything he does is being live-streamed on FB, and the media is covering him almost 24/7. You will not miss it. This man will make Manila great again!
