We’ve all heard of the saying “You are what you eat.” Does this mean we should choose to eat good food? There has been a sprouting trend of exploring healthier food options, and everyone seems interested in ditching unhealthy food. One of the trends is adopting a diet, where people are drifting towards meat substitutes.

We, too, at John Clements (JC) were not left behind in trying this trend. Last January 29, 2020, our lunch, themed “Meatless Wednesday,” was sponsored by Quorn Philippines. JC Employees were definitely curious about going meatless, even if it was just for one meal.

Before lunch started, JC President & CEO Ms. Carol Dominguez welcomed everyone, followed by a brief introduction from one of Quorn Philippines’ product managers, who shared trivia that left everyone astonished. To share some of this food for thought — did you know that 15,000 to 20,000 liters of water is required to produce just 1 kilogram of meat? Water is already starting to be a scarce resource, but still, 30% of humanity’s water footprint is related to the production of animal products. This will make you think twice when it comes to eating meat — though I know giving up meat is hard! I, for one, love to eat chicken! This was the reason why I also wanted to find out if eating Quorn products would be just as good as eating meat.

Quorn employees did a beautiful buffet setup in our collaboration room. The spread was filled with food that is already common in our eyes, but made healthier with high-protein alternatives for meat. The menu included southern fried burgers, lasagna, and sausage and peppers. Yum! It may sound like these were made with pure meat — especially when we say burger and sausage — but in reality, Quorn products are made of mycoprotein, a nutritious form of quality protein that is naturally low in saturated fat, a source of protein and fiber, and has zero cholesterol. They even set up a section, where we can make customized burgers to suit our preferences. I can say that I don’t think giving up meat is going to be that hard if you have meals prepared with Quorn products. Surprisingly, the food did replicate the taste of meat! And the best part is, it seemed like everyone enjoyed this meatless gathering!

This delectable, healthy meatless lunch organized by our CEO was (for most of us) an introduction to choosing good food. We don’t need to abruptly change our diet and stop eating meat, but can’t we challenge ourselves to, at least, skip one meal made out of meat? This may just help in reducing daily water usage. Thanks to companies like Quorn, it is effortless to find good, healthy food. Having a great selection of food products in different forms just makes the healthier versions of our various meals easier to cook.
