Relieved: AmCham 9th Virtual General Membership Meeting

By Albizalo Jusi

Relieved. This was how I felt after attending the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) of the Philippines’ 9th Virtual General Membership Meeting.

Relieved that the U.S. is, once again, making their presence felt in the Asia-Pacific region. May it be in commerce, trade, medical assistance, or whatever else, it doesn’t really matter to me, as long as they’re back to make sure that China doesn’t bully its way to absolute power in this part of the world.

Relieved that the U.S. State Department is helping our Bureau of Internal Revenue improve its information infrastructure for better revenue collection and transparency through the Trade Development Agency Grant, which has the full support of our own Sec. Carlos Dominguez, who also recognizes the importance of the U.S.-Philippine alliance.

Relieved that even with all the unnecessary statements made by a certain individual, who wishes to bully his way to extorting our ally in making them pay for our protection, the U.S. is still talking to grown-ups in the Philippine Government with regard to strengthening the bilateral relationship between Uncle Sam and Juan Dela Cruz. The U.S. has tuned out all the noise and is working silently with their partners in the Philippine Government to ensure everything is ironed out. Both parties acknowledge the importance of the Mutual Defense Agreement and the Visiting Forces Agreement in maintaining stability in this part of the region.

Relieved that the U.S. still intends to help strengthen our medical system by training more medical professionals and work together to win the fight against this pandemic.

Plans of inviting people from the U.S. Government and business leaders to come and see the Philippines for possible business and investment opportunities is also welcome news as this will allow better partnerships with local business groups and effectively create more jobs for Filipinos. This is critical if we want to rebuild our economy, jobs, and business opportunities. Plans to continue working with Philippine scientists was also mentioned — to share advancements in methods and technology in preserving marine resources and, hopefully, they will be able to invite the Peace Corps back.

After four years, it’s refreshing to know that Big Brother is back and he still has our back. Now, if only 2022 can come sooner.
