The Best Meets the Best: The 2017 AmCham Business Leadership Program

By David Paman

For the past 15 years, the American Chamber of Commerce has hosted a Business Leadership Program (BLP) which exposes the top 32 students from universities and colleges across the Philippines to various CEOs and business leaders. The students are selected based on their academic achievements and contributions as student leaders in their respective schools and through co-curricular activities. John Clements Consultants led the rigorous assessment process in procuring the best of the best for this prestigious program, which was held on April 21–30, 2017.

The students went through a rigorous week filled with various talks from industry leaders, CEOs and executives to expose them to their unique perspectives on careers, best practices, and company culture. On top of this heavy schedule, the participants took part in a business plan competition where they had to pitch for a social enterprise that hits the triple bottom line: People, Profit, & Planet.

Robert Sears, former Executive Director of AmCham and founding father of the BLP, envisioned that the program will not only help these students in their careers, but help the country, at the same time, by having leaders that share the same values that the program espouses. The values that focus, not only on profit, but on the people and the environment as well.

The relationships built during this program helped these students form a network that allowed them to make an impact not only on the business community, because after 10 grueling days of sleepless nights and being stretched to their mental limits, the participants formed a bond that made the vision of this program happen.

The program ended on a high note — celebrating the achievements of these students, awarding the best business plans, and recognizing the top performers during the week. The batch of 2017 continues to exemplify the BLP’s motto of “the best meets the best”.
